Effects of Synthetic Make-Up on Skin

We live in a chemical world! Once a product comes out, some other competitor or pirates will attempt at coming up with their own version of the primary product. This leads to manufacturers always changing their formulae. Too often, consumers have no idea what the ingredients on the boxes are anyway.

Just as you wouldn’t consider eating products that contain nasty chemicals or cancer-causing agents, you should be equally thorough about cosmetic products; after all, they are absorbed by your skin and DO enter your bloodstream.

Due to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) loose regulation on personal care products, manufacturers can put just about anything into their products, allowing the addition of chemicals harmful to their consumers. We are therefore exposed to harmful synthetic substances contained in today’s cosmetics.

The Obvious:

Most people suffer from adverse effects after using off-the-shelf synthetic products. The visible side-effects include burning skin, swelling skin, itching skin, reddening of the skin or small pimples.

Allergic reactions, irritated skin, clogged skin or inflamed skin could also be experienced.

Long-term:

Many chemicals used in cosmetics never cause signs of toxicity on the skin, but nevertheless contain potent systemic toxins. The cosmetic industry has been less than enthusiastic about conducting the necessary tests to determine the short-term and long-term effects of their products on consumers.

Nikolaus J. Smeh, author of Creating Your Own Cosmetics – Naturally: The Alternative to Today’s Harmful Cosmetic Products, gives consumers a how-to guide in his book. He talks about how only in the last decade or so did professionals begin understanding the adverse reactions caused by personal care products, including frequent occurrences of skin disease and cancer, both of which, he says, could be traced back to chemicals found in cosmetics.

Certain diseases and immune system problems can cause dermatitis, hives, and other skin conditions. More severe side-effects, such as reproductive system complications could also be experienced.

Smeh is quoted saying that:

My recent survey of today’s cosmetic products revealed surprising results. Over 80 percent of the products on the market today contain one or more ingredients that are documented in the medical literature to cause adverse reactions in humans and animals… Over 90 percent of all ingredients in commercially available cosmetics products are of synthetic origin…

He says that creating one’s products is far much safer that using these harmful synthetic products.

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, staph infection, stye, allergies, herpes and acne could be some of the nasty infections one can get from makeup.
