The eagerly awaited UEFA Champions League is finally here with us. The final pits two rival Madrid teams, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. It all goes down tonight at the The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, commonly known as the San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. It will be will be the fourth European Cup/Champions League final hosted at the stadium, after finals in 1965, 1970, and 2001.
The 2016 UEFA Champions League Final:
This final will be the sixth tournament final to feature two teams from the same association, the third all-Spanish final, and the second between teams from the same city, fielding exactly the two teams that faced each other in the 2014 Lisbon Final, making this, the seventh repeated final pairing. The all-Madrid final also guarantees Madrid will become the most successful city in the European Cup, with 11 wins and 17 final appearances, and also in all UEFA club competitions with 16 wins, overtaking Milan with 10 wins and 16 final appearances in the European Cup and 15 wins in all UEFA club competitions.
How We Got Here:
Winner Takes All:
The winner, will earn the right to play against the winners of the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League, Sevilla, in the 2016 UEFA Super Cup, to be held in the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway, on August 9th 2016. They will also qualify to enter the semi-finals of the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup as the UEFA representative.
Whichever Madrid giant leaves tonight as champion, will have trully deserved it. It might be the 11th title for Real Madrid, as well as the first for Atlético Madrid. The 10th for Real came at the expense of Atlético, two years back in 2014, when they lost 4-1 after extra time, though they led since the 36th minute, only for a 93rd minute equalizer, which surely demoralized the Atlético players.
It truly will be a Champions League final worth the watch.
